Ranji Trophy: Orissa post historic win over Bengal

Orissa created history, beating arch rivals Bengal for the first time in a Ranji Trophy match today. The 129-run victory in the East Zone match assumed added importance as Orissa achieved glorious feat at the historic Eden Gardens, the Mecca of cricket in Indian.

This was overall 36th win in a total of 177 matches for Orissa in Ranji Trophy and it was accomplished thanks to impressive performances by Debasis Mohanty, Sanjay Raul, Ajay Barik, Rashmi Ranjan Parida, P Jayachandra, Jagannath Das and Gautam Gopal.

Opting to bat after captain Shiv Sundar Das won the toss, Orissa rode on a century by Raul (118, 231 balls, 16x4) and a half-century by Parida (71, 148 balls, 11x4, 1x6) to compile a respectable total of 256. Bengal captain Sourav Ganguly was the most successful bowler for the home team, bagging six wickets for 46 runs.

In reply, Bengal were bundled out for 117 and conceded a lead of 139 runs. Orissa pace duo, Debasis Mohanty and Ajay Barik ran through the opposition batting line-up like a knife in the butter, bagging six and three wickets respectively.

In the second innings, Orissa were in deep trouble as they were reduced to 76 for seven. But fighting half-century each by Jayachandra (54, 8x4) and Ajay Barik (career-best 50 not out, 6x4) enabled the visitors muster another sizeable total of 249. The highlight of the innings was a 110-run partnership for the last wicket between Barik and Jagannath Das, who hit a career-best 44.

Orissa clinched the memorable win on the last day as Bengal were bowled out for 259 in the second innings, while chasing a daunting target of 389. Mohanty added five wickets to his first-innings efforts of six and finished with a match haul of 11 for 93.

Mohanty also reached 100 wickets in first-class cricket when he dismissed Rohan Gavaskar in the first innings. Mohanty was well complemented by Jayachandra, who scalped three wickets in the second innings. Gautam Gopal did a nice job behind the stumps, taking five catches in the second innings and seven in the match.
